CYCo Advanced Navigation Theory Course

This is offered as a full alternative to the RYA Coastal Skipper Theory Course. The assumed course pre-knowledge is Day Skipper Theory level.

All the subject areas are covered to the level required and importantly use the background of the Bristol Channel. The drive for the course to be developed was through experience of students individually struggling around key concepts of tides and chartwork. The course has been piloted, tested, reviewed so that it fulfils its goals of achieving the level of knowledge in best time and efficiency.

Prior to commencing the course students are expected to have IMRAY 2600 Chart Portfolio, and the Reeds Skippers Handbook, together with pencils, eraser, dividers and Portland plotter or parallel rules.

The course includes access to the following documents: joining instructions, lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, teaching aids, an Exam 1st Aid Pack, and Exam Day Sheets.

The course has five distinct phases:

  1. Pre-Course Learning – Collision Regulations, Lights & Buoyage. This is followed by Tides Theory – don’t panic, this about knowledge of the subject, not the ability to do all the individual calculations. This follows:
  2. CYCo Tides Masterclass Lesson – This is a 60-90 minute 1:1 Zoom Conference which involves completion of a one page template for all the tidal data in the Bristol Channel on a particular day demystifying secondary port calculations. It is backed up by a fully worked out step by step guide. The homework will be to prepare the sheets for the next 2 sessions.
  3. A 4 hour ZOOM Conference for Meteorology and weather forecasting, followed by establishing position. Homework will be to prepare the weather forecast for the next session. (This can be split into 2 x 2 hour sessions)
  4. A 4 hour ZOOM Conference for Course to Steer (using graphical method and NEW tables), navigating in restricted visibility, followed by Pilotage and Passage Planning. Homework will be to prepare a passage plan. (This can be split into 2 x 2 hour sessions)
  5. Finally an hour 1:1 Zoom Conference to review the passage plan you have completed and any elements that you are unsure of can be revisited.

Cost of the course:

£295.00 for the entire course via 1:1 Zoom Conference. £195.00 where sessions 3 and 4 above are delivered with 1-2 students

Alternatively the course can be delivered face to face at Penarth Marina. The cost includes car parking, tea and coffee aboard, AND lunch at the nearby Galley Café. 1:1 Tuition costs £295.00, 2:1 costs £165.00 per person and 3:1 costs £125.00 per person. This is a long challenging day 0930 to 1830hrs (and includes session 5 above when ready)

CYCo Tides Masterclass Lesson

The assumed lesson pre-knowledge is Day Skipper Theory level. The aim of the lesson is to demystify secondary port calculations in the Bristol Channel and the ability to be ready for an exam day or practical coaching session.

The lesson includes access to the following documents: joining instructions, lesson plan, PowerPoint presentation, teaching aids, and Exam Day Sheets.

The only equipment required is a calculator, pencil and eraser. Mistakes will happen!

The lesson is a 2 hour Zoom Conference, firstly looking at Tidal Theory and then the CYCo Tides Masterclass Lesson which involves completion of a one page template for all the tidal data in the Bristol Channel on a particular day. It is backed up by a fully worked out step by step guide.

Cost of the lesson £75.00 for the 1:1 Zoom Conference

Alternatively the lesson can be delivered face to face at Penarth Marina. The cost includes car parking, 1:1 Tuition costs £95.00 – 1:1 only.

CYCo ‘Course to Steer’ Masterclass Lesson

The assumed lesson pre-knowledge is Day Skipper Theory level. The aim of the lesson is to show how to calculate course to steer (allowing for leeway) using NEW tables as opposed to using graphics on a chart. The lesson includes access to the following documents: joining instructions, lesson plan, PowerPoint presentation, teaching aids, and tables.

The only equipment required is a calculator, pencil and eraser.

The Masterclass lesson is a 2 hour 1:1 Zoom Conference outlining a number of methods of calculating course to steer.

Cost of the lesson £65.00 for the 1:1 Zoom Conference

Alternatively the lesson can be delivered face to face at Penarth Marina. The cost includes car parking, 1:1 Tuition costs £85.00 – 1:1 only, 2:1 Tuition costs £50.00 each.

CYCo Passage Planning and Pilotage Masterclass Lesson

The assumed lesson pre-knowledge is Day Skipper Theory level. The aim of the lesson is to show how to create pilotage and passage plans that are up to the YM Exam standard. The lesson includes access to the following documents: joining instructions, lesson plan, PowerPoint presentation, teaching aids, some examples and template. The only equipment required is a calculator, pencil and eraser – If you have access to Navionics then preparing the plan will be much easier.

The Masterclass lesson is a 90 minute 1:1 Zoom Conference outlining the basics and reviewing the template and some examples. If you wish there is another 30 minute back-up Zoom Conference that gives time for your plan to be reviewed by the Instructor.

RADAR User Course – Afloat – 1 day

Cardiff Yachting Company offers this comprehensive course aboard X Beat II with hands on ability using the fully functional RADAR in the marina AND afloat in Cardiff Bay (as opposed to a simulator on a laptop/screen in a classroom).

It covers all the theoretical aspects of the RYA course, including risk of collision especially in restricted visibility and provides an opportunity to undertake practical exercises that could be set when undergoing a certificate of competence exam.

The cost includes car parking, tea and coffee & lunch on board, yacht charter and fuel costs.

1:1 Tuition costs £225.00, 2:1 costs £135.00 per person and 3:1 costs £95.00 per person.
