About us

The original Cardiff Yacht Company was established in 2011 whilst Peter was still a police officer, and initially provided theory learning opportunities.

In 2014 the first boat an IMX 38, aptly named X Beat established a presence on the water in the Bristol Channel mainly based at Cardiff Marina – we worked with some experience marketing companies and introduced over 150 people to sailing.

In 2015 X Beat was replaced by X Beat II a Beneteau 40.7 purchased with help from two customers – Iain and Andrew. A further 150 people had the benefit of an experience on the water.

In 2016 in partnership with Swansea Watersports RYA Sail Cruising qualifications were made available. The company focused on private tuition and skippered charter.

In 2018 a decision was made to rename the trading company as Cardiff and Swansea Yachting Company reflective of our ability to be based in two centres. This trading company will incorporate Cardiff Yachting Company which will offer RYA accredited training.

In February 2019 we became a RYA recognised training centre for Powerboat Training. An Internship scheme was trialed and our first intern was offered a bursary to complete his YM training.  The company prospered with turnover increasing by 50% and much to look forward.

2020 was a challenging year and lock-down taking 3 months without any income (or government support). Our second intern was engaged. The end of the season has seen a change in the ownership of X Beat II.

2021 & 2022 saw the fleet increased to some 5 boats but things change

2023 – X Beat II – Beneteau 40.7 and X Beat III – Ribtec 655.

X Beat II, and X Beat III are berthed at Penarth Marina, CF64 1TT adjacent to The Deck Restaurant at Penarth Marina.

Our Team

Peter Pope – Managing Director

Retired as a Detective Inspector with South Wales Police at the end of 2012. He holds a Commercially Endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore (Sail) & (Motor) Certificate and is an RYA Cruising Instructor (Sail), and RYA Powerboat Instructor. He is qualified to teach/assess RYA Navigation Theory courses to Yachtmaster Offshore, VHF, RADAR and Diesel Engine.

Charles Lyster – RYA Yachtmaster Instructor – Sail 

Charles is our Chief Instructor for sail cruising courses.

Tom Robinson-Jones – RYA Cruising Instructor – Sail

Tom is now a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster after joining us in the autumn of 2020. He has also bought a share into X Beat II. Tom’s background is a dinghy and powerboat instructor. RYA Sail Training, Private Tuition, Assisted Passages and own boat tuition are amongst his skills.

Sian Hooper – Sail Yacht Skipper

Sian is a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster and brings extensive experience delivering youth sailing projects.

Mike Batchelor – Chief Power Boat Instructor

Mike is a RYA Powerboat Instructor and SRC Instructor/Assessor.
