Cardiff Yachting Offers the following RYA Powerboat Courses: Level 2 Powerboat, Intermediate, Advanced and Advanced Exam Preparation & Hosting – See details below the schedule.

RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course – Cost £295.00

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations. Requirements & Outcomes:

  • Assumed knowledge: None.
  • Minimum duration: 2 days
  • Minimum age: 12 – Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate
  • Course content: Launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard.
  • Ability after the course: Self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft.

RYA Intermediate Powerboat Course – Cost £325.00

Covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques. It aims to teach the standard required to complete a short coastal passage by day. This course builds on the foundation knowledge of the Level 2 course and is suited to those who aim to drive larger more powerful powerboats. During the course you will cover cruising at planing speed and more advanced boat handling. It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course.

Required experience – Candidates should be competent to the standard of RYA Powerboat Level 2. It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid and VHF/SRC operator’s certificate and have knowledge to the level of Day Skipper theory.

Minimum duration – 2 days

Minimum age – 16

Content – Planning a day cruise, boat preparation, boat handling, pilotage, passage making, man overboard.

Format – Predominantly practical but with some classroom elements. The aim of the practical session is to put into practice the theory and complete a passage.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Course – Cost £349.00

RYA Powerboat Advanced Course Aims to teach boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters, with which the candidate may be familiar, in more demanding conditions. 

Required experience – Candidates should be competent to the level of the Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a knowledge of the navigation and chartwork to the level of Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased certificate. Pre-requisites – It is strongly recommended that candidates hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operators certificate.

Minimum duration – 2 days including at least 1 night navigation exercise

Minimum age – 17

Content – Preparation for sea, boat handling, passage making and responsibility as skipper, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, use of engines, emergency situations, night cruising.

Day 1 – 0930 to +2/3 hours after sunset

Day 2 – 0930 – 1630

Cost – £349.00 – Discount when 3 persons book together


Advanced Powerboat CoC Exam Preparation & Hosting – Cost £350.00

Cardiff Yachting offers a long day and half day preparation (will visit all the major skill areas that you will be required to demonstrate) with an Advanced Powerboat Instructor.

Immediately follows the exam with an indpendant RYA/MCA Examiner.

The cost is £350.00 and does not include the RYA Exam Fee: https://www.rya.org.uk/exams

Below you will see the RYA Exam Requisites

Minimum seatime  – Documented minimum sea time completed on a seagoing powerboat in the last 10 years:
•    30 days at sea, which may be reduced to 20 days at sea if an RYA Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate is held;
•    2 days as skipper;
•    800 miles, which may be reduced to 400 miles if an RYA Advanced Powerboat Course completion certificate is held;
•    12 night hours.
Background knowledge    Knowledge to the level of Yachtmaster Offshore theory
Form of exam    Practical
Certification required:
•    A GMDSS compliant Marine Radio Operator’s Certificate such as the RYA Short Range Certificate or higher.
•    An RYA First Aid Certificate or another valid first aid certificate, as detailed on the RYA website.
•    Advanced Powerboat course completion certificate ONLY IF claiming reduced sea time detailed above.
•    Photographic ID card or document, such as passport or driving license
Minimum exam duration    1 Candidate: 4 to 5 hours, 2 candidates: 5 to 6 hours, 3 candidates: 6 to 7 hours – No more than three candidates can be examined in one session.
Minimum age    17 at the time of the exam


RYA Level 1 Start Powerboating – Cost £175.00

This course is an introduction to boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

A one day introduction to powerboating. Requirements & Outcomes:

  • Assumed knowledge: None.
  • Minimum duration: 1 day
  • Minimum age: 8 – Candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate
  • Course content: Launch and recovery (8-11 observe), preparation of boat and crew, boat handling,  picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, leaving and coming alongside, being towed
  • Ability after the course: Able to drive under supervision
